NAHJ DC Mourns the Loss of National Founding Member George Ramos

From Los Angeles Times

We are deeply saddened by the passing of George Ramos, former L.A. Times editor and National Association of Hispanic Journalists founding member.

Without his pioneering efforts to organize Latino journalists across the country, we would not have our chapter today. Many colleagues are remembering how he touched the lives of aspiring journalists through mentoring and training. “George was a very special guy, excellent journalist. But above all, he was a great human being who dedicated his own personal time to helping young people advance in their careers,” said Maria Elena Salinas, Univision co-anchor. She served with Ramos on the California Chicano News Media Association (CCNMA) board when they and others decided to create the national association.

“George was someone who had great vision on how journalism should be, and he knew we still have a long way to go, so I hope NAHJ and its members can rededicate themselves to carrying on what he and many other heroes have long worked so hard to accomplish,” said Ernest R. Sotomayor, Assistant Dean at Columbia University Graduate School of
Journalism.

NAHJ inducted the three time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist into
its Hall of Fame in 2007.

As former President of the CCNMA Fresno chapter I want to thank NAHJ for recognizing George’s contribution and dedication to journalism.

He was a mentor, advisor and friend to our chapter. His dedication to passing on his knowledge was and will continue to be an inspiration.
